KCCD Present Wake Up Asian American Youth At Risk

Overview:

“For too long the myth of Asian American youth as the model minority has prevailed. As a result, many stakeholders continue to be blind-sighted and unaware of the stresses, risks, and pressures that impact Asian American youth.

This summit invites the community and nation’s leaders to learn and work together to find effective cultural and linguistic strategies to address these concerns.” – Hyepin Im President and CEO, KCCD

Asian American Youth at Risk:

  • The Juvenile delinquency rate has decreased in the past 20 years except in the Asian American Community.
  • Asian American youth have the highest percentage of juvenile violent crime — 21% in contrast to Blacks (17%) and Whites (16%).
  • Asian gangs are the fastest growing gangs in Los Angeles County with about 20,000 members.
  • Asian American women aged 15 to 24 have the second highest rate of suicide.— CNN.
  • 17% of Asian American boys reported physical abuse compared to 8% in boys grades 5 through 12.
