Burmese Refugees in the U.S. update

Posted by isaacblog on October 24, 2007

If you are having trouble viewing this message, please go to http://karen-konnection.icontact.com/archives/karenkonnection/posts/kansas-city-gathering-learn-karen.html.

Greetings,

There are two things I would like to call your attention to today.  First are the details of the gathering for pastors and church leaders involved with Karen and Chin resettlement in Kansas City.  Second, I wanted to let you know that the “Say It In Karen” materials are now avaialable on the Karen Konnection website.

1.  For anyone interested and able to attend, we’ll be holding a gatheirng of pastors and church leaders involved with Karen and Chin resettlement at the First Baptist Church of Kansas City, Kansas, 2900 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas 66102 on November 16 & 17.  On Friday, Nov. 16, we’ll meet from 3:00 – 5:00 pm and on Saturday, we’ll meet from 1:30 – 5:00 pm. After the meeting on Saturday, stay for a dinner prepared by the Burmese/Karen congregation of the First Baptist Church.

The meeting sessions will be low on presentations but high on questions, answers and discussion.  Resettlement is a new area of involvement for almost everyone, so the idea is that we can learn from each other.  There is no cost for these meetings or the dinner.

We’ll need to know how many are coming for the dinner on Saturday, so please let me know if you will be staying so we can give a count to those preparing the food.

Please note too, that these meetings take place during the Missions Confernece that is being held at the Central Baptist Seminary Campus in nearby, Shawnee, KS.  So take advantage of the opportunity to attend the Missions Conference as well as come to our resettlement gathering!

2.  “Say It In Karen” is a course in learning how to speak the Sgaw Karen language developed by Emilie Ballard.  These materials are now available online at www.karenkonnection.org.  A number of you have been asking for these for some time.  We’re sorry it has taken us a while, but now they are available.  From the KarenKonnection home page, look at the menu selections on the left side.  Under the heading “Learn to speak Karen” click on the link for “online lessons” and you can start learning to speak Karen.

Start with the introduction materials which will teach you how to read and write Karen.  Use the sound files to learn how to pronounce the Karen letters.  Karen is quite phonetic, so you’ll soon find yourself able to read Karen and that will give you the base to learn to speak.

These materials are not copyrighted, so feel free to download and print them off as you need them.  A special thanks goes to Emilie Ballard for making her work available and for Kerry Hassler for figuring out how to put them on the web site.

So far, we only have the sound files for the introduction and book one. That is enough to get you started.  We’ll make the remaining sound files available in the near future.  The trail to digitize these books and tapes has involved the digging out and dusting off of old disks, files and fonts as well the scanning, converting and manipulating of the information.  So, please let us know what bugs and flaws are found and we’ll try to make corrections.

USA Today recently reported that the US State Department admitted 13,896 Burmese (Karen and Chin mainly) during the federal fiscal year that ended September 30th, with 5,000 coming during the month of September alone.  To date, resettlement is only available to two of the nine camps along the border.  But, when we visited Thailand in July, names were being taken for those interested in coming to the US in two additional camps.  Meanwhile, in spite of the thousands leaving the camps for other countries, the total camp population is holding steady as more people within Burma are driven from their homes and forced to flee.  So it appears that the US will continue to receive 10s of thousands of Karen, Chin and perhaps others in the days and years ahead.

Blessings,

Duane Binkley

This AABA (Asian American Bay Area) Fellowship update contains the following notes -

1. Next AABA quarterly meeting on Wed Dec 5, 2007 at the SLZJCC, mark your calendars!
2. Special need for Koti Hu, worship leader in Seattle area, severely injured in car accident.
3. Kenneth Hom seeks an English Ministry or Young Adult Pastorate in a Chinese church.

********************************************************************

1. Next AABA quarterly meeting on Wed Dec 5, 2007 at the SLZJCC, mark your calendars!

Please mark your calendars for the next quarterly AABA meeting on Wed, Dec 5, 2007 from 10:30am to 12 noon. We will meet at our usual location at the San Lorenzo Japanese Christian Church. If you only attend these AABA meetings once a year, try to make this next one. I will be bringing the best doorprizes (in both quantity and quality!) for this Dec 5 meeting.

Last meeting I brought just one framed Bonds record home run game ticket. On Dec 5, I will bring at least four of them to give away! Doorprizes will also include autographed baseballs, autographed sportscards (at least 6!), CD’s, books, Starbucks giftcard and mug, Beanie Babies (at least 10!), brand new jig saw puzzles, a beautiful framed matted 11″x14″ Norman Rockwell print, new box of beautiful Christmas cards (retail value is $18!), various Christmas decorations, flower vases, and much more! Everyone will receive at least three doorprizes! Get something for yourself and also to use as a gift for someone else.

Please RSVP to me, Louis Lee, by Sunday night, Dec 2.

2. Special need for Koti Hu, worship leader in Seattle area, severely injured in car accident.

I just heard about a very special young man by the name of Koti Hu, who is an Asian American worship pastor at a large Anglo church in the Seattle area (Westminster Chapel, http://www.westminster.org/). This past July 28, 2007, Koti was involved in a very serious car accident (rear ended by a full-sized pick up truck) which broke his neck and did damage to his spinal cord. By God’s grace, he has been making some progress. Koti has some movement of his arms but is still paralyzed from the waist down.

Please click on this weblink (under the “updated 9/17/07″ heading close to the top of this page) and listen to his brief, but moving testimony when he returned for the first time to the worship service at Westminster where he leads worship. It brought tears to my eyes. I praise God for the incredible faith and maturity God has blessed this young 27 year old brother in Christ.

http://www.westminster.org/2007/09/21/update-on-koti-hus-injury/

As you can imagine, there is still much to pray about for Koti. His physical healing, his family and loved ones (parents and girlfriend), and the financial resources their family will need. There is a special fund raising event on Sat Oct 20 at the Westminster Chapel (charging $500 per tix w goal of raising $100K), click on this weblink for more info -

http://kotihu.com/

Please pass this note on to others who may be able to help Koti in prayer and possibly in giving.

Thanks!
Louis Lee

PANA News – 10/4/07

Posted by isaacblog on October 4, 2007

Friends of PANA are invited to an

API FAITH AND JUSTICE GATHERING:
CAPTURING THE MOMENT BY
REKINDLING THE MOVEMENT OF THE HEART
October 20-21, 1007

PANA invites you to join us for a weekend event, “Capturing the Moment by Rekindling the Movement of the Heart,” a space for primarily API folks who are practicing the intersection of culture, spirituality and justice—who wish to reflect on what that work means at this particular time and place in history.

Gathering will be elders and pioneers who have been doing this work for decades, such as veteran human rights activist Rev. Lloyd Wake, Sikh and other activists and teachers deepening the spiritual strength of their work, faith leaders engaging their congregations to stand up for justice, artists developing new forms of cultural work, and young API folks just beginning to find ways to get active and serve their communities.

We invite you to come to share your journey, insights and challenges. We hope that out of this weekend we are touched by the wisdom of the past as well as the emergence of new spiritual and political practices.

“Capturing the Moment & Renewing the Movement of the Heart: an API Faith and Justice Gathering”
PANA Institute, Pacific School of Religion, 1798 Scenic Ave., Berkeley 94709

We are in a moment. A moment to reclaim spirituality and the work of justice. A moment for developing a new methodology to do political work that is spiritually meaningful and sustaining. A moment that we can come together across ethnicity, generation, interracial and interreligious to form true relationships. A moment for doing more than strategizing but connecting the deepest soul part of all the movements, kindling that fire. A time for us to cut through all the stuff that gets in the way. If you feel drawn to this moment, and helping us to capture it and shape it, we hope you can join this intentional gathering and weekend journey to engage in practices of the heart and be renewed in the struggle for justice and dignity.

Registration (to cover cost of meals): $50 for two days, 9am Saturday – 5pm Sunday. Work-scholarships are available. Registration deadline is October 10th.

Sponsored by the Civil Liberty and Faith Project of the PANA Institute. For more information contact Rev. Deborah Lee, dlee@psr.edu, 510-849-8260 or visit the PANA website.

Community Course: “Theology of Struggle in Diaspora: Constructing an Asia-Pacific Islander Political Theology”
with Professor Eleazar Fernandez
Pacific School of Religion, 1798 Scenic Ave., Berkeley 94709

Together as a learning community we will engage in a search for an Asian-Pacific Islander transformative political theology. We will enter this search through the lens of Theology of Struggle (Filipino theology), its background, context and main tenets in the larger global context of the imperial project and predatory globalization. We will identify connections between the struggle of Filipinos, Filipino-Americans and other Asian-Pacific Islanders and identify post-colonial strategies and practices for social transformation. Course is open to GTU students for credit, pastors and lay leaders for C.E.U. and for the wider community for personal enrichment and study. This course is being offered as part of the Civil Liberty and Faith project of the PANA Institute.

Eleazar Fernandez is Professor of Constructive Theology at the United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. He is the author of “Toward a Theology of Struggle” (1994) and has published extensively on Filipino Faith, post-colonial theology, and cross-cultural mission. He has served as a pastor in the United Church of Christ Philippines and is active in the United Church of Christ U.S.A.

Feb 5 – April 27, 2008
Community Course: “Manzanar: America’s Internment”
Pacific School of Religion, 1798 Scenic Ave., Berkeley 94709
with Dr. Joanne Doi and Dr. Gordon Lee. 3 units. Meets Tuesdays 6:30-9 pm; first meeting is Feb. 5th.

April 2008 will mark the 39th annual Pilgrimage to the former WWII site of Japanese American internment at Manzanar, California. Initially created by a Buddhist priest and Christian minister as a ceremony to honor the dead, the pilgrimages have evolved into journeys that evoke layers of meaning, collective memory, healing and ongoing commitment for reconciliation, justice and compassion.

In preparation for active participation and theological reflection on the pilgrimage that draws a diverse community together, PANA is offering a interdisciplinary course at Pacific School of Religion. The course will examine the practice of pilgrimage and its interreligious nature (Buddhist, Christian, Shinto folk practice with Taoist elements), identity and race in Asian American history through place and memory (social geography/racial formation theory), and a framework for theological interpretation (anamnesis, compassion, solidarity). Instructors will be Dr. Joanne Doi and Dr. Gordon Lee. 3 units. Meets Tuesdays 6:30-9 pm; first meeting is Feb. 5th.

To register for the class please contact: Rev. Deborah Lee, (510) 849-8260 or dlee@psr.edu.
